Where your data lives

FinVault never talks to your Canadian bank. You download a statement file, the way you already can, and bring it home. Nothing else crosses over.

Your bank

Online banking

You sign in on the bank's own website, as usual. Your password never leaves it.

A statement file

QFX · OFX · CSV · text PDF

An ordinary export. No keys, no tokens, no standing connection.

Your server

FinVault + your database

SQLite or Postgres on your computer, NAS or home server. Backups are encrypted.

No bank password or bank connection, ever. Outside Canada, optional bank sync stays off until an admin turns it on.

Calm screens for a monthly routine

Once a month: download, import, sort what's left in the tray. About two minutes per account.

The FinVault dashboard: a To sort tray of new transactions beside category pockets that fill toward their monthly limits.

Real screens, filled with a made-up demo household.

Everything a household needs, in one place

Accounts, budgets, bills, shared costs, investments and tax time. Nothing leaves your server unless you turn it on.

Bring in and sort

  • Statement importbuilt in
QFX, OFX, QBO, QIF, CSV and text PDFs, with bank presets. Duplicates are skipped and any import can be undone.
  • Move from another appbuilt in
Bring your history from YNAB, Actual Budget, Mint or Monarch in one go, with accounts, categories and transfers mapped for you.
  • One-click sortingbuilt in
New lines wait in a tray with likely categories. Rules and remembered merchants sort the rest for you.
  • Tags and payeesbuilt in
Tag a trip or a renovation across categories, and tidy messy merchant names into one clean payee.
  • Transfers matchedbuilt in
Paying off a card or moving money to savings doesn't count as spending twice.

Plan ahead

  • Budgetsbuilt in
Monthly limits you can see filling up. Leftovers can roll into next month, envelope style.
  • Bills and remindersbuilt in
Recurring bills laid out by day, reminders before each one is due, and alerts for price changes or new subscriptions.
  • TFSA, RRSP and FHSAbuilt in
Track contributions against the room CRA gives you, so a busy year doesn't lead to an over-contribution.

Look back

  • Tax timebuilt in
Medical, child care, donations, moving and home-office spending, gathered in one place.
  • Investmentsprices optional
Holdings from Wealthsimple and Questrade exports, with gains, allocation and adjusted cost base.
  • CAD and USD, honestlybuilt in
Convert to your base currency, and see a warning when a rate is missing instead of a silent guess.
  • Ask your own dataoptional · off
Plain-language questions and category suggestions, using a model on your own hardware or your own OpenAI account. You see what would be sent first.

Your household

  • Splits and shared costsbuilt in
Split a transaction across categories or people, see who owes whom, and count only your share.
  • ReceiptsOCR optional
Attach photos and PDFs to transactions. Optional text reading runs on your own server.
  • Separate loginsbuilt in
Everyone in the household gets their own data and login, with two-factor sign-in, single sign-on and an audit log.
  • Your data, whenever you want itbuilt in
Download everything that's yours in one zip, receipts included. A forgotten password is fixed with a one-time reset link.

Also: savings goals, assets and net worth, a cash-flow forecast, a debt payoff planner, year in review, a watched import folder, encrypted backups and a phone app you can install.

Built around how Canadian households bank

Most money apps want your bank password. Canadian banks warn against sharing it, and many people don't trust it. FinVault takes the file your bank already offers instead.

  • Never connects to Canadian banksDirect sync is blocked for Canadian accounts by design. Import is the only way in.
  • English and FrenchThe whole app, including default categories, in Canadian French.
  • Registered plans and tax timeTFSA, RRSP and FHSA room, plus the spending your accountant asks about.
  • Canadian mortgagesThe debt planner uses semi-annual compounding, the way Canadian mortgages work.

Good to know

Do I need to give FinVault my bank password?

No. You download a statement file from your bank's website and import it. FinVault never asks for bank credentials, and it never connects to Canadian banks.

Where is my data stored?

In a database on the machine you run it on: a laptop, a NAS or a home server. There is no FinVault cloud.

Can my partner and I both use it?

Yes. Each person gets their own login and data, and you can share individual costs. One person is the admin who invites everyone else.

I'm coming from Mint, YNAB or another app. Can I bring my history?

Yes. Export from YNAB, Actual Budget, Mint or Monarch and use Move from another app. It maps accounts and categories, pairs transfers, keeps labels as tags, skips anything you've already imported, and can be undone.

Do I have to use AI?

No. AI features are off by default. If you want them, you can point FinVault at a model on your own hardware or connect your own OpenAI account.

Running in a few minutes

You need Docker. Three steps, then open it in your browser.

  1. Get the code

    git clone https://github.com/finvaultapp/finvault.git
    cd finvault
  2. Set it up

    cp .env.example .env
    # optional: edit .env
  3. Start it

    docker compose up -d --build
    # open http://localhost:8000

The first account you create becomes the admin. Your data lives in the finvault-data Docker volume.
